The ancient muskox has dwelled in the Canadian Arctic for tens of thousands of years. Uniquely adapted to its life on the tundra, this larga relative of goats and sheep is truly unique. With its protective layers of wool and hair, its snow-adapted hooves, exceptional vision, and powerful sense of smell, the muskox can thrive in the High Arctic where the sun does not rise for much of the year and temperature often fall to -40 degrees Celcius. Though hunted by Europeans to near extinction in the nineteenth century, the specifs became protected in 1918 and has made a slow but steady recovery across much of its range.
